    Police find sex offender with missing Vermont girl at Lisbon Walmart

    Lisbon — State police arrested a convicted sex offender from Vermont at a Lisbon Walmart on Thursday who was found with a 16-year-old Vermont girl first reported missing by her mother on June 4.

    Vermont State Police earlier this week had issued a statement asking for the public’s help in locating the girl and 47-year-old William Smith Jr., a man with no permanent address who was out of compliance with the Vermont sexual offender registry.

    The girl was last seen leaving her residence on foot with a backpack, according to Vermont state police. Police said she might be with Smith, with whom she was acquainted, and had reached out to other state and law enforcement agencies.

    Connecticut State Police located the two inside Walmart at 180 River Road in Lisbon on Thursday. Police said the girl was not injured and was in good physical health. She was taken to Troop E in Montville and remanded to the custody of the Department of Children and Families.

    Smith was taken into custody as a fugitive from justice. He additionally was charged with operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license and improper use of a license plate.

    Smith was held in lieu of a $100,000 bond and expected to be arraigned Friday in Norwich Superior Court.
