Major road project begins Monday on Ocean Avenue

New London — Construction will begin Monday on a $2.1 million reconstruction and improvement project along a portion of Ocean Avenue between Niles Hill Road and Neptune Avenue.

The project is funded through the state’s Local Transportation Improvement Program.

The project includes pavement reconstruction along a 4,450-foot stretch of road, installation of granite curbing where curbing is missing and upgrading the storm drain system. Traffic signal systems will be removed at the intersections of Ocean Avenue and Glenwood Avenue, and Ocean Avenue and Neptune Avenue. ADA-compliant ramps will be constructed at all intersections along with new concrete sidewalks and driveway aprons as needed, and two 5-feet-wide bicycle lanes will be added.

The project is expected to take five months or less, depending on weather and site conditions, according to a statement from Mayor Michael Passero. City staff prepared original concepts of the project for presentation to the Southeast Connecticut Council of Governments and supervised the project design, which was coordinated through SECCOG and the State Department of Transportation. The City of New London conducted a formal bid process for construction and construction inspection.

B&W Paving & Landscaping LLC of Waterford is the qualified low bidder for construction. CLA Engineers Inc. of Norwich is the low bidder for the construction inspection. Each contract was approved by the New London City Council at its July 3 meeting.
