State won't prosecute assault case involving New London attorney

The state will not be prosecuting New London attorney Anthony C. Basilica and a Colchester man in connection with a June 24 altercation on the patio of the Black Sheep Pub in Niantic.

Charges against Basilica, 27, and Joshua Taylor, 21, were "nolled" Tuesday when both men appeared in court in New Britain. Their cases had been transferred there to avoid the appearance of a conflict of interest, since Basilica practices criminal law in New London. If both men stay out of trouble, the charges will be dismissed in 13 months.

According to a court document, Basilica and Taylor were attending a banquet for participants of that day's charity golf tournament at Cedar Ridge Golf Course in Flanders. Taylor knew Austin Free, who was with Basilica and other friends, but did not know Basilica. It is unclear what prompted the fight, which was witnessed by several people.

Basilica suffered a fat lip and bloody knuckles, smelled of alcohol and appeared intoxicated, according to police.

Taylor suffered multiple fractures on the left side of his face and nose. His blood alcohol level was 0.32 percent and he was combative with first responders, according to police.

Basilica was arrested moments after the incident. East Lyme Police continued to investigate and obtained a warrant for Taylor's arrest.

The case was handled by New Britain State's Attorney Brian Preleski and heard by Judge John L. Cordani. Basilica was represented by Attorney William F. Dow III. Taylor was represented by attorney William E. McCoy.
