Motorcycle driver dies after colliding with box truck in Norwich

Norwich — A motorcycle driver has died after a collision between the motorcycle and a box truck Monday afternoon by Staples Plaza at 45 Salem Turnpike, police said.

The motorcycle was heading west on Salem Turnpike toward Staples Plaza, while the other vehicle was going east and making a left turn into the plaza, police said.

The city's police, East Great Plains Volunteer Fire Department, and American Ambulance responded at 12:48 p.m. to the collision. Police said the motorcycle driver was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are not releasing the individual's name until next of kin are notified.

The driver and passenger of the vehicle making a left turn were not injured, police said. The truck is owned by the University of Connecticut and was returning to Storrs after making a delivery at the Avery Point campus, a UConn spokesperson confirmed.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the accident and have not charged anybody at this point.

Police said Salem Turnpike had only two lanes of traffic open for during the roughly three-hour investigation at the site, which led to traffic delays.
