    State, local police to crack down on drunken driving over holiday weekend

    As the holiday weekend quickly approaches, state and local police have begun announcing efforts to crack down on intoxicated driving.

    According to state police, Troop E in Montville began deploying extra patrols on Thursday and will keep up the increased enforcement through Tuesday.

    Police said troopers will focus on finding intoxicated drivers, but also will keep an eye out for speeders, distracted drivers and those who aren’t wearing seat belts.

    DUI-focused troopers primarily will be patrolling the following areas:

    [naviga:li]Interstate 395, exits 9 through 18[/naviga:li]

    [naviga:li]Interstate 95, exits 83 through 86[/naviga:li]

    [naviga:li]Route 164, Griswold and Preston area[/naviga:li]

    [naviga:li]Route 2, North Stonington area[/naviga:li]

    Police additionally will conduct a drunken driving spot check on Friday on Route 2 in North Stonington.

    Norwich police also have announced upcoming sobriety enforcement checkpoints. The first will take place from 5 p.m. Saturday through 1 a.m. Sunday. The next is scheduled to begin the evening of Dec. 31 and last into the morning of Jan. 1, 2018.

    Police said the checkpoints will be located on routes 2, 32 and 82.
