North Stonington — State police on Monday charged a 36-year-old Boston man with stealing an ambulance from Rhode Island Hospital in Providence and driving it into Connecticut.

Rhode Island police alerted Connecticut troopers to the theft. State police said they pulled the ambulance over on Interstate 95 south prior to state Route 2 around 6 a.m.

Police charged Johnny I. Kimbrough with first-degree larceny of a vehicle and, at his request, later transported him to The William W. Backus Hospital for treatment.

Kimbrough’s bond was set at $10,000. He is due in New London Superior Court June 4.
