Police: Rhode Island man punched Speedbowl driver in the face

Waterford — Police on Wednesday night charged a Rhode Island man with punching a driver in the face after a race at the Waterford Speedbowl.

Scott Barrington, 44, of West Greenwich, R.I., was charged with breach of peace and second-degree assault.

Lt. Stephen Bellos said two cars crashed toward the end of the race about 9:30 p.m. Bellos said that’s when Barrington — apparently a friend or crew member of one of the involved drivers — came up and punched the other driver in the face as the driver was walking off the track.

Bellos said the punch came “out of nowhere” and may have broken the victim’s nose. The victim was taken to the hospital.

The night, a "Wild 'n' Wacky Wednesday," included a big-wheel race for children, all of whom received free admission.

Bellos said Speedbowl management barred Barrington from the facility. Barrington is scheduled to appear in court on June 12.
