Groton — The body of an unidentified man was recovered in the waters of Eastern Point Beach by Groton City police Friday afternoon, police said.

The man was found in the water near the shore on the west side of the beach at 12:17 p.m. Friday, according to the City of Groton Police Department. His body appeared to have come in with the tide, according to Chief Michael Spellman.

The body was recovered by Groton City police with assistance from the Groton City Fire Department and Groton Ambulance.

About one quarter of the Eastern Point Beach parking lot and part of the waterfront remained blocked off with crime scene tape Friday afternoon. Spellman said that they extended the perimeter “to give the decedent some dignity.”

Further information about the man was being withheld, pending notification of next of kin. No persons fitting his description have recently been reported missing, Spellman said.

Police said the investigation into the incident includes Groton City police Patrol and Detective divisions, the New London County state's attorney's office and the Chief State Medical Examiner's office.
