NLL great Shawn Evans traded to Black Wolves

Because the New England Black Wolves played at the Calgary Roughnecks during last year’s National Lacrosse League season, fans at the Mohegan Sun Arena didn’t have the chance to see Calgary forward Shawn Evans.

Black Wolves’ fans will get acquainted with Evans, for certain, this season.

Evans, 29, the two-time NLL Most Valuable Player and a native of Peterborough, Ontario, was traded to New England on Monday. The Black Wolves sent Tyler Digby (acquired Sunday from Vancouver) and first-round draft picks in 2018 and 2019 in exchange for Evans and Calgary’s third-round pick in 2018.

“We just added arguably the best indoor lacrosse player in the world to our roster," Black Wolves co-owner Mike French said in a press release. “… We are not just adding Shawn’s physical ability and stats, but we are adding his leadership and locker room presence.

“Shawn changes this team in many ways. We are extremely excited to have him as part of the pack.”

Evans finished the 2015 regular season with career highs in points (130), goals (47) and assists (83) to capture the league’s scoring title and set an NLL single-season points record, his third straight 100-point season.

He has 789 career points (280 goals, 509 assists) with 925 loose balls in 161 games.

Also in 2015, Evans reached the Mann Cup final with the Peterborough Lakers and earned a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in Syracuse, being named MVP there, as well.

“It’s a great start to a new chapter in my lacrosse career,” Evans said in a telephone interview. “… I live on the East coast. I’ve been travelling out west for four years. Now I’ll be closer to home, closer to family. … Hopefully I can stay a long time here and make a name for myself in New England.”

Evans and his wife Kayla have three daughters, 7-year-old Paityn and 15-month-old twins Ella and Emery.

“I’m glad they have the opportunity to come watch me play and my parents, too. It will be nice to have them there,” Evans said.

First-year Black Wolves coach Glenn Clark, who, like Evans, has yet to see the inside of Mohegan Sun Arena, said there are two things that propel Evans into what the coach calls the “upper echelon.”

“The first is he’s a great talent,” Clark said. “The offensive guys have that ‘it’ factor, whatever ‘it’ is. They know how to find the net, they know how to get to the net. And the biggest thing with Shawn is his compete level. He wants to win. He goes hard; he goes hard to the net; if there’s a turnover, he goes at the defense hard. He plays at a high competitive level and when you couple that with a really great offensive skill set …”

Evans also won the NLL MVP Award in 2013. He helped Peterborough win four Mann Cups between 2004-2012 and in Junior A lacrosse Evans was a member of Minto Cup championship teams with Peterborough in 2006 and Six Nations in 2007. He was the Minto Cup MVP in 2006.

The Black Wolves open the 2016 season Jan. 9 in Vancouver before returning for their home opener against Calgary on Friday, Jan. 15.

“I know Glenn. He’s a great coach,” Evans said. “They’re warriors. They like to put everything on the floor. I’m excited to be a part of it, all buying into the same system. It’s a good atmosphere. They’re only in their second year now. It’s something new. We’re both ready to take on a challenge.”
