August is a major month for local golf

August is major month at several area golf courses.

Several familiar faces competed for club championship titles.

Let's start with Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton.

For the second time since 2011, Steve Chevalier faced Ken Wetmore in the men's club championship final.

And for the second time, Chevalier pulled out the victory in the 36-hole match. He rallied from a three-hole deficit in during the first 18 holes to post a 3 and 2 win on Sunday.

Chevalier, who's from Groton, cut the deficit to one by end of the first round by capturing the 14th and 18th holes. From there, he kept the pressure on and eventually seized the lead.

He beat a tournament veteran in Wetmore, who won his club-record fifth championship last year.

To reach the championship match, Chevalier beat No. 16 Jeff Clark (5&4), No. 8 Mark Toscano (2&1) and No. 4 Keith Lewis (4&3). He was the medalist in qualifying action, earning the top seed.

In the women's club championship, third-seeded Margaret Hirsch knocked off No. 1 Michel Vejar.

At Pequot Golf Club in Stonington, Jim Lathrop defended his men's club championship, beating former champion Chris Trisciuzzi by eight strokes in the 54-hole event. Lathrop finished at 6-over with rounds of 70, 75 and 71. Trisciuzzi had rounds of 74, 75 and 75 to shoot 14-over. James Stack was third at 16-over (73-74-77).

It was Lathrop's fifth title overall, leaving him one shy of record holder Vic Walter, who won the last of his six championships in 1991. Fran Campbell also is a five-time winner (1961, 1963-66).

Diederick van der Velde beat Nick DeLauro to win Stonington Country Club's 36-hole men's club championship earlier this month.

Michelle Murphy captured the Stonington women's club championship, beating former champion Jeanne Tingo.

At River Ridge Golf Course in Jewett City, Matt Bedard earned the men's club championship title, outlasting Steve Lombardi in the 36-hole medal play event. Bedard finished with a 148 (75-73).

    Short putts

    • Black Hall Club assistant pro Adam Rainaud is attempting to defend his Connecticut PGA Championship crown this week. He just returned from competing in the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin.

He's in good position after Tuesday's 36 holes at Wethersfield Country Club. He's tied for second place with 2013 champion Kyle Bilodeau of Ellington Ridge, both at 3-under 139. He had two very different rounds, shooting a sizzling 6-under 65 that included seven birdies before falling to a 74.

Through 10 holes in the second round, Rainaud was 1-under. But then he had two double bogeys (No. 11, No. 18).

Kevin Giancola of Golf Quest Family Sports Center takes a one-shot lead (70-68–138) into Wednesday's final round. Giancola is shooting for his fifth Connecticut PGA Championship.

    • Lots of stuff going on at Pequot Golf Club.

Mike Scanlan took first in the net flight championship at 12-under (64, 67, 67) while Bill Johnson placed second at 8-under (64, 69, 69).

After the first of two rounds in the men's senior club championship, George Banks holds a seven-stroke lead. Banks shot a 70 and Bill Boots is second at 77. In the net flight, Ron Vislosky is first with a 61 and John Bowen (62) ranks second. Second round action is Wednesday.

The duo of Trisciuzzi and Stack won the club's two-man scramble last weekend, shooting a 64. Shane Winters and Brian McNeil finished first in the net division with a 59.

Marc Findlay used a nine iron to record a hole-in-one on the 125-yard, 12th hole.

    • Josh Cameron of Shennecossett Golf Course was the top local finisher at the 30th Connecticut Public Links Championship, a 36-hole tournament held on Aug. 12 at Fairview Farm Golf Course in Harwinton. Cameron shot a 3-over 147 (72-75), tying for eighth. Tony Susi of Mohegan Sun Country Club at Pautipaug tied for 32nd at 154 (74-80).

Chet Hrostek of The Golf Club of Oxford Greens won the tournament in a one-hole playoff, firing a 5-under 139 (69-70).

    • In other Shennecossett news, fifth-seeded Matt Spindler-Virgin defeated No. 7 Joe Kane, 5 and 4, to win the first flight title.

There was an interesting first round match in the club championship flight, pitting Fitch assistant golf coach Keith Lewis against Corey Jones, the team's No. 1 player in 2014. Lewis prevailed.

    • Stonington Country Club crowned several champions earlier this month. Drew Ebdon defeated Peter Gardner in the A Flight while Bill White nipped Jordan Elliott in the B Flight, and Jim Bates knocked off Tom Giannelli in the C Flight.

In the women's competition, Roisin Armstrong defeated Lorraine Tiberii for the A Flight title.

In other club news, Jack Cannon had a hole-in-one on the 140-yard second hole, using an eight iron. Jordan Elliott aced the 135 yard, 12th hole, using a nine iron. Peter Miller's ace came on the 179 yard, 16th. He accomplished the feat with his trusty #5 hybrid.

    • Lynn Valentine of East Lyme is competing in the 17th Connecticut Women's Open Championship at The Golf Club of Avon. She fired an 80 in the first of two rounds on Tuesday.

    • Mike O'Brien recently won the River Ridge net division title with a 144 (71-73).

    Upcoming events

    • Bill Hermanson of Black Hall Club will team up with longtime friend and playing partner Dave Szewczul in the CSGA's 34th Senior Four-Ball Championship next Tuesday at Indian Hill Country Club in Newington. The pair tied for third last year. The duos of Bill Ernst and Tim Sisk of Shennecossett and Richard Wilczewski (Shennecossett) and Kevin Grobsky (Hunter GC) also will compete.

    • On Labor Day weekend, Old Lyme Country Club and Great Neck Country Club will hold men's club championship matches.
