Hartford (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's proposed "second chance society" is receiving bipartisan support.

The Democrat has offered up a series of initiatives aimed at giving nonviolent criminal offenders more opportunities to reintegrate into society, including the elimination of mandatory minimum sentences for nonviolent drug offenses.

The bill was scheduled to be discussed Friday at a public hearing before the General Assembly's Judiciary Committee.

On Thursday, Senate Republicans said they support most of Malloy's plan, including reforming the parole process and streamlining the pardons process to help ex-offenders obtain employment.

However, the GOP is seeking some changes to Malloy's package. For example, they don't want all records wiped clean. They also proposed a new program to help people who've been arrested that are homeless and have mental illness.
