Task force to decide on law banning smoking in cars

Hartford, Conn. — A legislative task force is expected to decide whether to recommend that Connecticut lawmakers vote to ban smoking in vehicles when a child is inside.

The controversial proposal has been met with opposition from lawmakers concerned about the potential for invasion of privacy or whether it could lead to profiling by police looking to pull over particular drivers.

Other lawmakers have questioned whether such a law would even be enforceable.

The task force has expanded its scope and plans to recommend that lawmakers spend more money on smoking cessation and prevention programs.

The panel is scheduled to meet Wednesday, days before the legislature convenes its regular session on Feb. 3.
