Man who shot Connecticut trooper unlikely to be charged

Rockland, Maine (AP) — Authorities say a Maine man who shot a Connecticut State Police trooper during a hunting trip in Texas is unlikely to be charged.

Trooper 1st Class Stephen Davis, of Hebron, Conn., died Saturday on the Cinco Ranch in Maverick County. He was a 27-year veteran of the state police.

Authorities say the 50-year-old Davis was hit by a shot fired by 74-year-old Alvin Chase Sr. The Warren man told authorities he was trying to shoot a wild hog.

The Portland Press Herald reports that Maverick County sheriff's investigator Robert Sifuentes says he and the medical examiner's office agreed the shooting was an accident.

Sifuentes says it's unlikely Chase would face charges in the case.

Chase declined to comment on the shooting.
