HARTFORD, Conn. — Hartford's mayor says the developers of the city's new $65 million minor league baseball stadium failed to meet another deadline for having the park ready for delivery to the Double-A Yard Goats.

Mayor Luke Bronin said the stadium was not substantially complete by Tuesday's deadline and also won't be substantially complete by May 24.

That's the grace-period date that was built into an agreement between the city, the team and Centerplan Construction in January, after officials realized the project would not be finished by opening day in April.

The team was hoping to begin playing at the stadium on May 31, but officials have said they will need two weeks to prepare for a home opener.

"We will be working with all of the parties involved and assessing our options," Bronin said in a statement. "We want to get the stadium open as quickly as possible, but we also need to hold our partners accountable and protect the city's interests."

Messages left for officials from Centerplan, the team and the Eastern League weren't immediately returned Tuesday.

League president Joe McEacharn told The Hartford Courant the league has a number of contingency options. He said he plans to tour the stadium Wednesday and meet with city and team officials.

Under the agreement, because the developer missed Tuesday's deadline, the team is no longer obligated to pay $2 million toward the construction costs. The developer also faces fines of $50,000 for the first day and $15,000 every day after until the project is finished and the city has the option of bringing in a new developer.

The Yard Goats are currently playing home games about 40 miles away in Norwich.
