DEEP: Don't eat fish from Quinnipiac River in Southington

Hartford — The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection is warning people not to eat fish taken from a stretch of the Quinnipiac River in Southington until water quality tests are completed.

DEEP Commissioner Susan Whalen says water and soil sediment samples are being taken on Thursday after an estimated 300 gallons of chemicals spilled into the river from a metal plating company late Wednesday. She says DEEP expects to have results to review on Friday.

The agency is recommending people not eat any fish caught from the Quinnipiac between West Queen Street and downstream to Route 10 in Southington. DEEP is also advising the public to stay away from the river banks in the affected area.

Meanwhile, the town of Southington Water Department has temporarily shut down two wells.
