Police: Woman uses fake ID to purchase cell phones

NORWALK — After being caught attempting to purchase pricey cell phones with a fake ID, a New York woman asked responding officers if they could just forget the whole thing, police said.

Police were dispatched to Best Buy at 330 Connecticut Ave. Wednesday morning on a complaint by loss prevention staff that a woman had presented a fraudulent driver’s license in an attempt to purchase two gold iPhone 7 cell phones valued at $2,200.

The identification presented by Sofi Taveras of Brooklyn, N.Y. was an Illinois driver’s license that showed up as invalid when scanned.

When police officers arrived and confronted Taveras, she told police that she was in Norwalk visiting a friend and reportedly asked them, “Can’t I just leave the store?”

Taveras, 19, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was charged with second-degree forgery, criminal attempt to commit third-degree larceny, and criminal impersonation.

Her bond was set at $25,000 and she was given a court date of Sept. 30.
