Former nurse sentenced for stealing morphine from workplace

WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) — A former nurse at a Worcester nursing home has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for stealing powerful prescription painkillers.

The Telegram & Gazette reports that 33-year-old Lea Roberge was also sentenced Wednesday in federal court to three years of probation and ordered to undergo drug treatment.

Roberge previously pleaded guilty to two counts of tampering with a consumer product.

Prosecutors say Roberge was working at the Holy Trinity Eastern Orthodox Nursing and Rehabilitation Center when she stole morphine from at least six vials and one bottle in two emergency narcotic kits. Roberge concealed the thefts by replacing the morphine with saline solution.

Other facility staff noticed that the vials had been tampered with.

Roberge said she developed a drug dependency after getting into a car accident.
