Providence police recruit injured in accidental shooting
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — A Rhode Island police recruit has been injured in an accidental shooting at a friend's apartment.
Police say 29-year-old Teudy Asencio was shot in the foot Monday while a family friend was showing him a handgun at a home in Cranston.
Cranston Police Chief Michael Winquist says the friend didn't realize the gun was loaded when it went off and fired a bullet into a wall. In a panic, the man pulled out the magazine and pulled the trigger again, this time with the bullet striking Asencio.
Police say Asencio has been taken to a local hospital for treatment. It is unclear what his future will be with the Providence police academy.
The friend, 57-year-old Michael Marurono, has been charged with a misdemeanor for firing in a compact area.
