UConn invited to compete in prestigious Phil Knight Invitational

The UConn men's basketball team will be part of an elite 16-team field playing in the 2017 Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Ore.

The three-day event will take place around Thanksgiving week next year, running Thursday, Nov. 23, Friday, Nov. 24 and Sunday, Nov. 26. The participating schools have combined to capture 23 national championships and appear in 85 Final Fours.

The 16 teams — UConn, Duke, Florida, Arkansas, Butler, Georgetown, Gonzaga, Michigan State, North Carolina, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oregon, Stanford, Texas, Portland and Portland State — will be split into two eight-team events, playing at two different Portland area venues. The sites are the Rose Quarter's Moda Center and Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

The PK80 invitational will honor Nike founder Phil Knight in advance of his 80th birthday.

"It's an honor to be included in this prestigious group of college basketball programs and to get the chance to participate in an event as exciting as the PK80," UConn coach Kevin Ollie said in a released statement. "The level of competition, as well as the college basketball atmosphere, will make it a tremendous experience for everyone involved, especially the student-athletes.

"After all he's done for college basketball, there is no more appropriate way to help Phil Knight celebrate such a special birthday."
