UConn men hold off Central Florida 66-63

Orlando, Fla. — Momentum is clearly on UConn's side after the Huskies posted their fifth win in the last six games on Saturday.

Fifth-year senior Rodney Purvis continued his hot shooting streak, scoring a team-best 18 points to help propel UConn to a 66-63 victory over Central Florida in an Amercian Athletic Conference game at CFE Arena. He converted five of six from 3-point range, making him 20-for-32 from beyond the arc in the last five games.

The Huskies (12-12, 7-5) led by as much as 18 but then went cold over a nine-minute stretch as UCF used a 14-2 run to tighten the gap to 56-51 with under two and a half minutes left. But sophomore Jalen Adams made a floater in the lane over 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall to spark a 5-0 spurt and stretch the advantage back to double digits, 61-51, with 1:29 left.

UCF's B.J. Taylor fueled the second-half rally, scoring 16 of his 20 points in the final nine minutes, including six of the game's last nine points to keep the Knights (15-10, 6-7) within striking distance.

Adams (team-high seven assists) and freshman Christian Vital added 14 points each for UConn. The Huskies were 9 of 13 from 3-point range after sinking 16 of 24 in Wednesday's 97-51 rout of South Florida. Senior Kentan Facey had 12 points and senior Amida Brimah had 12 rebounds.

The Huskies swept the regular season series with the Knights, who finished shooting an icy 34.9 percent from the field.

It was UConn's only third road win of the season. The Huskies reside in fifth place in the AAC.

UConn returns home at 9 p.m. Thursday to host Memphis in an AAC game at the XL Center in Hartford. The Tigers are in fourth place (8-4), a game ahead of the Huskies.
