Three Huskies sign NFL free agent deals

The NFL Draft ended on Saturday with only one UConn football player hearing his name called.

Defensive back Obi Melinfonwu went in the second round, 56th overall, to the Oakland Raiders on Friday night.

Some other Huskies will attempt to take a different route to the professional ranks.

Wide receiver Noel Thomas signed a free agent deal with the Detroit Lions while offensive lineman Andreas Knappe and placekicker Bobby Puyol did the same with the Atlanta Falcons and Baltimore Ravens, respectively.

Thomas, who's from Norwalk, posted this on Twitter: "Been one hell of a ride so far & I'm far from finished. Grateful for the opportunity to sign an Undrafted free agent deal with the Lions! Been counted out my entire life. Watch me grow. #Lionhearted."

The American Athletic Conference had a record 15 players drafted in the six rounds over the last two days. The previous mark of 12 was set in 2014. Nine of the 12 AAC teams had at least one player selected.

Temple linebacker Haason Reddick earned the distinction of being the highest drafted AAC player, going 13th overall to Arizona.

East Carolina wide receiver Zay Jones (37th overall, Buffalo) and Houston linebacker Tyus Bowser (47th overall, Baltimore) were the only other AAC players to go ahead of Melifonwu. All three went in the second round.
