    Sun win preseason finale

Arlington, Texas — The Connecticut Sun finished the preseason unbeaten with an 82-74 win over the Dallas Wings on Sunday.

Connecticut dearly hopes that's a positive omen after three straight last-place finishes.

Rookie Jonquel Jones had 16 points, five rebounds and four blocks and Kelsey Bone scored 11 for the Sun. They open the regular season Saturday at the Chicago Sky.

Connecticut trailed 18-6 after the first quarter before shooting 50.9 percent from the field (28-of-55) over the last three quarters. They finished making 11-of-24 3-pointers.

“It was sloppy at times,” first-year Connecticut head coach Curt Miller said. “It seemed like an exhibition game. It was a sluggish start for us, which is a concern because we did have a lot of veterans in the starting lineup, but credit to us fighting back. We saw some positive things out of young kids fighting for the final roster spot. We made a bunch of threes and forced (31) turnovers.''

Three-year veteran Kelly Faris had a team-high 7 rebounds and 5 steals for the Sun. Rookie Jamie Weisner made 3 of 5 field goals for 7 points while fellow rookie Rachel Banham shot 2-of-4 for six points with seven assists.

Glory Johnson had 13 points and nine rebounds for Dallas, formerly known as the Tulsa Shock. It had a 41-to-32 rebounding advantage. It also took 35 free throws to the Sun’s 15.

“We fouled like crazy tonight, so we have to clean that up,” Miller said. “Three games in a row now that we have fouled a lot.

"We went in tonight with a focus on trying to keep them off the offensive glass because they are such a good rebounding team and they still killed us on the glass. So fouling and offensive rebounding will be pointed out when we watch film."

Connecticut was without starters Chiney Ogwumike and Camille Little as well as rookie Morgan Tuck and Aneika Henry-Morello. Ogwumike was held out during the preseason after having microfracture surgery on her right knee in January 2015 and missing last season.

Tuck didn’t make the trip as she was at UConn’s commencement. Henry-Morello is expected to arrive Monday after finishing her overseas commitments. Little’s finished her Italian season last Friday and there’s no timetable yet for her return.

Starters Skylar Diggins and Odyssey Sims didn’t play for the Wings. Fellow starter Courtney Paris was in Turkey playing in Sunday's Game 3 of the KBSL finals.

Connecticut must pare its roster down to 12 before the start of the regular season. Eleven spots will be claimed once Henry-Morello and Little arrive, leaving Faris, Weisner (the 17th overall pick in April's draft), and training camp invitees Victoria Macaulay (center), Brandie Baker (guard), and Jennifer O'Neill (guards) vying for the final spot.
