It's the Blessing of the Fleet in Stonington

Most Rev. Bishop Michael Cote blesses fishing vessels during the annual Blessing of the Fleet.

It's tradition: the Blessing of the Fleet in Stonington Borough.

The annual event happens on Sunday, and it honors members of the local fishing fleet who had died at sea. Vessels, along with the people who will on those vessels in the coming year, will be blessed by Bishop of Norwich Michael Cote.

First, there is a 10:30 a.m. mass at St. Mary Church, and then a procession - featuring everyone from borough officials to the Westerly Band to members of the Portuguese Holy Ghost Society and the Knights of Columbus - will begin. It all ends at Town Dock, where the Blessing of the Fleet festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. That will include food, live music by Country Misfits, and miniature golf.
