East Lyme — It's Evan Tryon's job to pass the baton to Brandon Dinsmore, the anchor of the East Lyme High School boys' track team's 4x400-meter relay.

Then Tryon watches his teammate beat whomever might be standing in the way of a Vikings relay victory.

“He could do it every day, no matter how fast the person is,” Tryon said. “It's something you look forward to.”

East Lyme's 4x400 team won the final event on the track Saturday afternoon to cap the Vikings' first-place finish at the Eastern Connecticut Conference championship meet. East Lyme, third last year to three-time champion Fitch, won the meet with 115 points, followed by Windham with 98 and Norwich Free Academy with 87.

Tryon and Dinsmore were joined in the relay by Jared Ayers and Josh Lopez. Dinsmore reeled in Stonington anchor Ulysses Sepulveda for the victory, with East Lyme edging the Bears in 3 minutes, 33.69 seconds. Stonington was second in 3:34.29.

Greg Atkinson added a pair of individual victories for East Lyme in the 110 hurdles (15.14) and 300 hurdles (40.07) and the Vikings also got a victory in the 4x800 relay from Dinsmore, Colvert Moore, Jarrett Mirecki and Vann Moffett in 8:12.65, more than 12 seconds faster than their previous best.

Andrew Peitzsch (pole vault), Josh Leffingwell (pole vault), Konstantinos Lanis (high jump) and Moffett (3,200) turned in second-place finishes.

“Everyone was just concerned,” East Lyme coach Steve Hargis said, a few minutes after Atkinson lifted Dinsmore on his back and sprinted around the infield in jubilation, with East Lyme earning a sweep of the indoor and outdoor track championships.

“Like, 'We're having such a good season. When's this going to plateau?' We were worried about NFA. And a team were were really looking at was Windham. They're great competitors in track and field. They look like a big school. … I told our kids the day before yesterday, they've just got to stay focused. If everyone just scores the points they're assigned for, we'll be OK. If you can move up a place, move up a place.”

Hargis credited Dinsmore with coming back from an 800 race in which he was an uncharacteristic 15th to run the perfect anchor leg in the 4x400.

Hargis said that after Dinsmore ran the 4x800 at the beginning of the meet, the individual 800 came up faster than it was scheduled and perhaps caught his senior anchor off guard.

“It's easy to chase people,” Dinsmore said of his success in the final relay. “When you're ahead, you have to figure out how to run. When you have to catch up, there's nothing to think about. … Everyone did well today.”

NFA led the meet early on thanks to a 1-2 finish by Jawaun Johnson (11.05) and Andris Vital (11.23) in the 100 meters. Vital is the defending State Open champion in the event, while Johnson is one of several members of the Class LL state runner-up football team who went out for track.

Johnson also took the 200 (22.57) with Vital third and the pair helped lift the 4x100 relay team to a win, as well, joined by Khaleed Exum-Strong and R.J. Darby.

“Our assistant (football) coach Jason Bakoulis said, 'Why don't you guys go win a state championship (in track),” said Johnson, the football team's quarterback. “I guess I just love running. I'm getting stronger. My legs will be stronger, hopefully.”

“I was still beating him at the beginning,” said Vital, who said the team has good chemistry, with him and Johnson enjoying a friendly rivalry. “Then he learned how to do the start. It's been great. The guys are fun. We know when we have to be teammates and when we have to compete.”

New London's Jelani Lucas added a pair of wins in the long jump (21-5) and triple jump (42-2.5).

NFA's Connor Gralton was the other local winner, taking the 1,600 in 4:27.44.

Windham's Joe Fogarasi broke the meet record in the pole vault at 15-6.
