    Local Roundup: Rathbun helps lift Wheeler past Old Lyme

    Old Lyme - Alysia Rathbun had 10 digs, five kills, and four aces as the Wheeler High School girls' volleyball team swept Old Lyme on Wednesday, 25-11, 25-10, 25-21, in a nonleague match.

    Lexie Galluci had 12 assists and two aces, Sara Gaccione had 15 digs, and Jennifer Paride had five kills and nine aces for the Lions (2-0). Also, Christy Sehl had six aces, three kills.

    Holly Fiscus had 10 assists for the Wildcats (0-2) and Colleen Mueller had 12 digs.

    In other games:

    • Mae Sefransky had 10 assists, 10 points and five aces as Fitch beat Montville 25-14, 25-18 and 25-12 in the season opener for both teams. Sofie Clark had seven kills and four blocks, Caroline Taber had 17 points and Mackenzie Aldridge had six kills for Fitch. Montville was led by Mia Ferguson (four blocks), Olivia Fargo (six digs), Hailey Edwards (six points) and Naomi Clark (eight assists).

    • Katy Konow had 32 assists and 20 digs as Lyman Memorial beat East Lyme 25-17, 26-24, 25-21. Ilaria Altini had 18 kills for Lyman and Anna Puleo added nine kills. Alexis Bell had 20 assists and Maggy Powers added 10 kills for the Vikings.

    Men's soccer

    • Kyle Phillips scored in the 83rd minute as Coast Guard rallied to beat Johnson & Wales, 2-1, to remain unbeaten. Austin Read had a goal and an assist for the Bears (4-0) and Caelan Harshaw and Alex Lane each had assists. Dustin Hughes scored six minutes into the game for the Wildcats (1-2-1). Coast Guard is ranked eighth in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III New England poll.

    • Mitchell College led 2-0 at halftime and held on to beat Western Connecticut 2-1. Nicholas Donahue of Pawcatuck scored at 19:04 and Frank Williams made it 2-0 at 38:49. Jordan Derosier had an assist and Ramazan Sinani made nine saves for Mitchell (3-1).

    Women's soccer

    • New England College scored twice in the second half to break a 1-1 tie and beat Mitchell College 3-1. Mitchell's Elisa Johnson scored at 25:57 with Taylor Silva assisting to tie the game at 1-1. Katie McBride made eight saves for Mitchell (0-2).

    H.S. boys' soccer

    • Matt Prue scored 1:13 into the first overtime to give Stonington its 2-1 win over Fitch. Ethan Murphy scored and Cam Whalen had an assist for Stonington. Christian Urena scored for the Falcons and Greg Cooper had six saves.

    • Peyton Mulhern scored twice as Wheeler beat Norwich Tech, 5-0. Caleb Melinosky and Ryan Condon and T.J. Condon all scored for the Lions.

    • MacDuffie scored 10 minutes into the game and held on to beat Williams School 1-0. Case Van de Velde made 16 saves for Williams (0-2).

    H.S. girls' soccer

    • Halle Anderson's goal early in the second half broke a 1-1 tie and helped lead Stonington to a 3-1 win over Fitch. Sarah Thomas had two assists, Tara Watrous and Gabby Silvia also scored and Gabi Hoops made one save for Stonington. Ally Clarke scored and Shea Berry made 12 saves for Fitch.

    • Meredith Aird had a goal and an assist as Old Lyme opened its season with a 3-0 win over Hale-Ray in a Shoreline Conference game. Julia Strycharz and Kyra Teixeira also scored, Jenna Peduzzi had an assist and Tori Sims made two saves for Old Lyme.

    H.S. boys' cross country

    • Norwich Tech had eight of the top nine runners and opened its season with a 21-40 win over Ellis Tech in the Constitution State Conference. Luke Lopriore of Ellis Tech won the race in 18:42 and was joined in the top five by Norwich Tech's Daniel Porter (18:47), Mike Froscello (19:05), Aaron Pelletier (19:21) and Troy Anderson (21:22).

    H.S. girls' swimming

    • NFA opened its season with a 92.5-88.5 loss to Windsor in a nonleague meet. NFA won all three relays and Emma Buckridge won the 200 IM. Katie Hatfield-Spendolini, Ashley Lac, Buckridge, Jenilee Antonetty and Ciera McDonough were each on two winning relay teams.

    H.S. girls' cross country

    • Norwich Tech beat Ellis Tech by forfeit (15-50) in a Constitution State Conference meet to open its season. April Sanborn of Norwich Tech won the race in 29:21 and was joined in the top five by teammates Santi Smith (31:18), Ashley Roch (32:43), Meghan Moore (36:08) and Sarah Noel (36:42).

    College volleyball

    • Mitchell College lost to St. Joseph, 3-1. Mitchell (2-2) won the first game 25-19 before losing 25-10, 25-13 and 25-14. Amanda Garcia had nine kills, Nicole Caminiti had 16 assists and Old Lyme's Kaisea Caramante had 20 digs for Mitchell.

    • Coast Guard is ranked ninth in the latest New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) Division III poll. Coast Guard is off to a 5-2 start after winning its first three games at its own Bear Invitational before going 2-2 last weekend at the Brandeis Invitational.

    Women's tennis

    • Mitchell College beat Albertus Magnus, 8-1. Samantha Ryan of Quaker Hill, Veyda McVey, Jenny Groman, Alexa Litwak and Dominique Lacroix all won singles matches for the Mariners (1-1).
