Teen to undergo competency evaluation in Montville double homicide case

A New London Superior Court judge has ordered a competency evaluation for the 18-year-old accused of fatally stabbing his grandparents at their Montville home last week.

Marcus Fisher, 18, was charged Jan. 28 with two counts of murder, second-degree arson and murder with special circumstances, which alleges he killed two or more persons at the same time or in the course of a single transaction. He is being held in lieu of $1 million at the Corrigan-Radgowski Correctional Institution.

Fisher made his first appearance Monday in the court where major crimes are tried. Judge Hillary B. Strackbein appointed attorneys Kevin C. Barrs and M. Fred DeCaprio from the public defender's office to represent Fisher. At their request, the judge then ordered a competency evaluation. He will be interviewed by clinicians from the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services to determine whether he understands the court proceedings and is able to assist in his defense.

Fisher called 911 at 4:46 a.m. Jan. 28 to report two dead bodies at 26 Morgan St. in the Uncasville section of Montville, according to a police report. He told officers he stabbed his grandfather, 76-year-old John Piscezek, with a kitchen knife the previous night after getting into an argument. He said he stabbed his grandmother, 77-year-old Gertrude Piscezek, when she came into the room. He said he cleaned the knife, then went outside and lit a fire in an attempt to burn down the house.

Supervisory Assistant State's Attorney Lawrence J. Tytla and Senior Assistant State's Attorney Theresa Anne Ferryman will be prosecuting the case. Fisher's next court date is March 5.
