CD tip: "Lover" by Taylor Swift

Here’s the thing about Taylor Swift: she’s a helluva songwriter. When I started listening to her latest release, “Lover,” I would think I wasn’t impressed by certain tunes … and then I’d find myself humming the songs’ choruses. And some, of course, I loved from the get-go, including “The Man,” “London Boy,” and “I Forgot that You Existed.” My complaint about “Lover” is that the production tends to go for a muted sound that doesn’t lean into the melodies. The insistent poppiness of “ME!” and “You Need to Calm Down” is the exception here. The album also has a few too many songs that feel like filler (“False God” and “Daylight”). All that said, I’m liking “Lover” more and more as I listen to it. Taylor Swift strikes again.
