Book tip: "The Dark Corners of the Night," Meg Gardiner

    Book tip

The Dark Corners of the Night

    Meg Gardiner

Gardiner has certainly done plenty of fine work in the thriller field with her Evan Delaney, Jo Becker and Unsub series. But "The Dark Corners of the Night," the latest Unsub title, is a cliched mess. Yes, the requisite serial killer, The Midnight Man, is chilling and distinctive. But the characters seem tired, the dialogue almost parodic, and the major plot point breakthroughs by this elite squad of FBI profilers occur in silly and convenient fashion. Worst, though, was a closing and protracted chase scene which, the longer it went on, increasingly reminded me of the epic and first "Family Guy" battle between Peter Griffin and Ernie the Giant Chicken that — by surreal design, and for laughs — went on a ridiculously long time. In "Corners," though, it was just tiring.
