Ivoryton Playhouse opens 'The Porch on Windy Hill'

    David Lutken (Contributed)

Area theater fans know David Lutken from leading performances in “Woody Sez: The Life and Music of Woody Guthrie” at the Ivoryton Playhouse and as Will Rogers in “The Will Rogers Follies” at the Goodspeed Opera House.

He is at the Ivoryton again with a new work, “The Porch on Windy Hill.” The original play with music was written by Lutken, director Sherry Lutken, and the musician-actors who are joining them at the Ivoryton: Lisa Helmi Johanson and Morgan Morse. (Also part of the show is understudy EJ Zimmerman.) They wrote it during the pandemic.

The theater describes the show as “the heartfelt story of an Appalachian family’s roots and the music that binds them together.” Mira brings her boyfriend to meet her grandfather, from whom she’s been estranged. In order to repair his relationship with Mira, the grandfather has to come to terms with his past prejudices.

The music boasts such existing bluegrass tunes as “Birmingham Jail,” “Down in the Valley” and “Blackberry Blossom.”

"The Porch on Windy Hills" opens Thursday at the Ivoryton.
