Making a statement

"Artist's statements," those little placards you see at museum or gallery shows whereupon the Creative One explains what he or she was trying to do, can be really unintentionally humorous - or, less frequently, insightful. Esteemed painter Jerry Weiss, who teaches at the Lyme Academy College of Fine Arts, has a new show of very nice landscapes and figure studies, and he actually snared me with a statement that included, "The brushstroke is the artist's handwriting … " Cool.

"Jerry Weiss Oil Painting Exhibit" is on display at the Main Street Gallery, Temple Beth Shalom Rodfe Zedek, 55 E. Kings Highway, Chester, and runs through mid-March. Gallery hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Mon.-Fri; (860) 526-8920.
