The ex-husband of the woman brutally murdered in Madison on Wednesday morning is wanted for questioning by the Madison Police Department. Barbara Hamburg, a divorced Madison mother of two, was found Wednesday morning in the yard of the home she was renting at 44 Middle Beach Road West.

Jeffrey Hamburg, 61, of West Hartford "had a brief conversation on Wednesday" with state police, Hamburg's attorney, Hugh F. Keefe, said when contacted late Friday afternoon. Just one hour later, Madison Chief of Police Jack Drumm told a news conference that local and state police are trying to locate Hamburg. Drumm emphasized that Hamburg was wanted for questioning only. Police said may be driving a black or gold 1997 Toyota Camry sedan with New York registration ASV3591.

Anyone with information regarding the location of Hamburg or having information pertaining to this homicide investigation is asked to call the Madison Police Department at 203-318-3033. All calls will be kept confidential.

On Thursday afternoon, The Office of the Chief State's Medical Examiner confirmed that Hamburg died from "blunt force trauma and sharp force injury." At this point no charges have been filed and no warrants sought in the case.

At approximately 11:25 a.m., Madison police received a 911 call reporting an injured person outside the home. Barbara Hamburg, 48, was pronounced dead at the scene by first responders. Madison police did not release her name until Thursday afternoon, pending notification of next of kin.

Barbara and Jeffrey Hamburg have two children, a son who is a graduate of Daniel Hand High School, and a daughter who is a sophomore at the school.

The couple had ties to Madison that extend more than a decade. They bought a home at 14 Stanton Court in the late 1990s. After their 2002 divorce in Georgia court, acquaintances said the continued to live in different buildings on their property until the home sold in October 2007 for $1.1 million.

Courts awarded joint custody of the couple's two children, giving Barbara Hamburg primary, physical custody and Jeffrey Hamburg secondary physical custody and visitation rights.

Connecticut court records show a series of legal issues after the divorce. In 2005, the two had returned to court and spent the next four years disputing child support payments. In January 2009, Barbara Hamburg had filed a motion for contempt against Jeffrey Hamburg for failing to pay agreed up educational expenses and medical expenses for the children.
