Sierra Club endorses Courtney for Congress

The Connecticut chapter of the Sierra Club announced Tuesday that it had endorsed Joe Courtney, the Democratic Congressman who is seeking re-election in the state's 2nd Congressional District.

"Joe Courtney has been a leader in Congress in protecting our air, land and water," said John Blake, chairman of the Sierra Club's Connecticut chapter, in a statement. "Joe has been a consistent supporter of green technology and renewable energy. He has taken the lead on green job creation and increasing the green job market that has benefited both job employment and the environment."

The endorsement cited Courtney's support of the Eight Mile River Protection Act and his leadership in protecting Long Island Sound and the Quinebaug-Shetucket Heritage Corridor, as well as his support of a moratorium of offshore oil drilling and other environmentally friendly policies.

Courtney is running against Republican Janet Peckinpaugh and Green Party candidate G. Scott Deshefy. The group also endorsed Courtney in his 2006 and 2008 bids for Congress.
