I've been driving by that sad, empty, silver diner in Groton everyday for months now, hoping that something exciting would open. You know the one I'm talking about - across the street from the Walmart on Rte. 184.

As long as I've lived here it's either been empty or held a series of mediocre greasy-spoon breakfast joints.

Well, the giant Dumpsters made an appearance late last week and I've been crossing my fingers. Maybe a bagel shop? Or a diner that makes homemade doughnuts? A retro-themed Chick-fil-A? A girl could only wish.

The sign went up in the window this week - COMING SOON: Five Guys Burgers and Fries. I was kind of surprised, considering there's one ten minutes down the road in Mystic and ten minutes the other direction in East Lyme. Could it be true?

Sure enough, I checked the Five Guys website and it's there. Coming soon - 143 Gold Star Hwy.

Personally, I think there are better burgers in the area, but I think Five Guys is the best of the fast food options. What do you think? Are you a Five Guys fan?
