Two killed in Route 184 crash identified

Stonington — Police have identified the two people who were killed in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon as 22-year-old James Austin of Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, and 15-year-old Levi Masalin of Ledyard.

Police said it appears the motorcycle was traveling west on Route 184 at a high rate of speed when the driver lost control just east of Taugwonk Road at about 4:10 p.m.

Police believe Austin was driving the motorcycle. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Masalin, of 24 Maple Terrace, was taken to Westerly Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Masalin is the son of the director of Ledyard’s Public Works Department, Steven Masalin, the town’s mayor confirmed.

Ledyard school officials said that Masalin did not attend school there.

    The accident remains under investigation.
