Finizio sworn in as New London's first mayor in nearly a century
New London — In a ceremony that included the police department’s color guard, the fire department’s bagpipes and drums, an invocation, a benediction and a parade, Daryl Justin Finizio was sworn in as the first elected mayor in the city in about 90 years.
More than 650 people poured into the Garde Arts Center to witness what many were calling a “historic” night for the city.
“Change has come to New London,’’ said Finizio after newly appointed City Clerk Nathan Caron administered the oath of office. “We gather tonight in a unique and awe-inspiring moment in our city’s history. Tonight we inaugurate not only a new government but a new era.’’
He praised residents for believing in change and voting for a “strong, principled, positive and, in this diverse community, yes, progressive leadership.”
Democratic Town Committee Chairman William Satti was the emcee during the ceremony, which also included the swearing in of the new City Council and Board of Education.
Shortly after being sworn in, Finizio walked from the Garde Arts Center down State Street toward the Crocker House Ballroom to the tune of "God Bless America." The street was closed off to traffic.
