UPDATED: Stillman: New London could get $500,000 for OpSail

New London — The city should be getting $500,000 from the state to help fund OpSail 2012CT, state Sen. Andrea Stillman, D-Waterford, told the City Council tonight.

“The governor is the honorary chairman,” Stillman said. “I believe we will be OK. I think a half million dollars will be flowing here.”

“We’ll be fine,” added state Rep. Ernest Hewett, D-New London.

The legislators, along with state Rep. Ted Moukawsher, D-Groton, attended a special City Council meeting to talk about the upcoming legislative session in Hartford.

Stillman said she wants people who are raising money for the July event to know that the state is supporting it.

The four-day New London event, to be held July 6-9, is part of a national maritime celebration marking the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the writing of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”

Tall ships will travel to several U.S. cities, beginning April 17 in New Orleans and concluding in New London.
