Connecticut Yankee gets new licensee

The operating license for the Connecticut Yankee power plant in Haddam has been transferred to the new company being created by the merger of Northeast Utilities and NSTAR, which was completed Tuesday.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced approval of the transfer, including the spent fuel storage installation, this week. NU and NSTAR own companies that are shareholders of Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Co., licensee of the plant.

The plant has been closed since 1996. Decommissioning was completed in 2007. Spent nuclear fuel from the plant's 30 years of operation is kept in dry cask storage units on the 582-acre Connecticut River site.
