    Rebecca Eichler of Madison has matriculated at St. Joseph's College of Maine, at which she will major in nursing.

    • Green Hill Martial Artists' Achievements: Scott Perry, an attorney as well as a student and assistant instructor at the Killingworth-based studio, earned his black belt, and Edward Ricciuti, a Killingworth resident and author, was awarded his 3rd-degree black belt.

    • Hobart & William Smith Colleges Graduates: Maggie M. Stewart of Madison earned a bachelor's in environmental studies and geoscience, magna cum laude; and Katherine T. Stirling, also of Madison, earned a bachelor's in media and society. Stewart studied in Queensland, Australia, and Stirling in Marchutz while attending the school.

    • James Madison University Matriculants for 2012-'13: Elizabeth Ballantine and Ella Russell, both of Madison.

    Michael Kenney of Killingworth earned a bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering technology from Rochester Institute of Technology College of Applied Science & Technology.

    Hanna Kelly of Killingworth, the daughter of Lisa and Robert Kelly, received a $2,000 scholarship from the Rotary Club of Chester while a student at Haddam-Killingworth High School.

    Viral Keshwala, formerly of Madison, appeared in a scene of the recent film The Dark Knight Rises.

    Alexandra Marais of Madison, after completing her junior year of high school at Grove School, has entered the Class of 2012 at Bard College at Simon's Rock.

    Alexandra Lee of Madison, a student at Westbrook Dance Academy, is a member of the school's Petite Competition Team, which scored gold and placed first overall for mini groups with its dance, Rio, at the Take Center Stage Dance Challenge National Competition in Mystic.

    Leanne Minges of Madison earned a bachelor's of science in nursing from the College of New Jersey.

    Erin K. Picone of Madison earned a bachelor's of science in accounting from Saint Joseph's University and is employed as an auditor at Parente Beard in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

    Maria E. Picone of Madison earned a master's degree in education from Boston College and is employed at Bishop Connolly High School in Fall River, Massachusetts.

    Noah Swimmer of Madison delivered the Welcome Address at Hamden Hall Country Day School's Centennial Commencement Exercises. Swimmer was president of Student Government for the Class of 2012. He will attend George Washington University.

    Emma Thomson of Madison, the daughter of Brigid and Hugh Thomson, completed her second degree, a bachelor's of science in criminal justice, at Western New England University; Her first degree was a bachelor's of arts in psychology. She has established herself in the Springfield, Massachusetts, area and has been employed full time with the police department since 2009.

    Briana Vertucci of Killingworth, a rising 8th-grade student at Haddam-Killingworth Middle School, participated in a three-week trip to Greece, Italy, and France this summer, traveling with the People to People International student exchange ambassador program.

    Keelin Virgulto of Madison, while a 3rd grader at Ryerson Elementary School, won second place in the 3rd-grade division at the eighth annual eesmarts student contest for students in grades K through 12.

    Cadet 1st Class Joseph Vitali of Killingworth earned a bachelor's of science in marine engineering from Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

    • Western New England University Graduates: Joseph G. Van Huysen of Killingworth, bachelor's of science in business administration, cum laude, and Matthew C. Young of Killingworth, bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering, summa cum laude.

    Matthew Wivell of Madison was awarded a full Naval ROTC Marine Option scholarship to the University of Colorado.

    Matthew C. Young of Killingworth received the College of Engineering's Henry L. Sundberg, Jr., Award during baccalaureate ceremonies at Western New England University, from which he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's of science in mechanical engineering. While at the school, he was inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta, Tau Beta Pi, and Sigma Beta Tau honor societies and was active in the university's chapter of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

    Career Achievements

    Kevin Barry of Madison, associate professor of law and co-director of the Civil Justice Clinic at Quinnipiac University School of Law, was instrumental in the clinic's receiving the Clinical Legal Education Association Award for Excellence in a Public Interest Case/Project. Barry and four law students worked in support of the advocacy effort to repeal Connecticut's death penalty. Barry and the students spoke to legislators, researched legislative history and state and federal case law regarding the death penalty, and testified before Connecticut's Joint Judiciary Committee with their findings.

    Rosalyn Cama of Madison, president and principal interior designer of CAMA Incorporated, was named the 2012 Designer of Distinction by the American Society of Interior Designers.

    Jim Craven of Madison, a lawyer in the Litigation Department of Wiggin & Dana, was appointed president of the Connecticut Defense Lawyers Association for a one-year term that began on June 21.

    Tim Diemand of Madison, a litigation partner at Wiggin & Dana, co-chair of the firm's Insurance Practice Group, and chair of the firms' Associate Hiring Committee, was appointed co-chair of the Connecticut Bar Assocation's Federal Practice Section. Claudia Elferdink, minister of the Shoreline Unitarian Universalist Society in Madison, was honored at a publication party celebrating her Harvard Divinity School thesis about an early religious feminist. Elferdink's thesis was published in the spring 2012 issue of The Journal of Unitarian Universalist History.

    Tandy Beal, a member of The Country School's Class of 1960, received the 2012 Distinguished Alumni Award. Originally from Killingworth, Beal has worked on four continents and is an acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and director. She currently resides in California.

    • Madison Police Department Officers Thomas J. Bull and Brian Phillips were honored by Mothers Against Drunk Driving Connecticut during its annual Law Enforcement Recognition Awards Luncheon.

    • Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing Award Winners: Lauren Janush, R.N., of Madison, a primary psychiatric nurse at VNA Community Healthcare; and Jennifer Rauscher, R.N., of Killingworth, a nurse at VNA Community Healthcare.

    Acts of Community Service and Charitable Contributions

    Sally Adua of Madison, a member of the Providence College Class of 2014, spent a week working for Habitat for Humanity as part of the school's alternative spring break program.
