Norwich police investigate hit-and-run; two injured

Norwich police scan the roadway for evidence after an incident where a car allegedly struck two pedestrians pinning them against another car in front of 380 Hamilton Ave. Friday, Oct. 12, 2012.

Norwich — Police were searching Friday night for the driver of a black or dark-colored vehicle who struck and seriously injured two pedestrians in front of 380 Hamilton Ave. (Route 165) before fleeing the scene.

The hit-and-run accident occurred at 7:22 p.m., police said. The man and woman who were struck were taken to The William W. Backus Hospital, police said. The 20-year-old woman was in critical but stable condition Friday night, while the 21-year-old male victim was treated for minor injuries and released, police said.

Police are searching for a black woman who was driving the car, a four-door sedan with heavy front-end damage, that struck the pair as well as a parked vehicle.

Police are also looking for the driver of a second vehicle who was not involved in the accident but was traveling behind the offending vehicle and may have witnessed the accident.

At the scene Friday night, police interviewed witnesses on Hamilton Avenue.

"I can't talk about it now," one of the women who had been interviewed by police said. "It's too tragic."

The Norwich police accident reconstruction team was at the scene Friday night. Hamilton Avenue was closed in the vicinity of the accident while police investigated.

Police are asking that anyone with information call (860) 886-5561 ext. 6, or ext. 500 if they would like to leave information anonymously.
