Groton - An early morning traffic jam Thursday south on Interstate 95 in the area of Exit 87 was caused when a construction worker intentionally ran across the highway, police said.

Police said Thomas Zimmerman of Lemoyne, Pa., was driving a tractor-trailer when he swerved to avoid a construction worker who ran across the highway from the left shoulder to the right shoulder. Zimmerman struck a car that was parked on the right shoulder. The accident happened around 8 a.m.

Police said there was construction work being done on both the right and left shoulders of the highway. The construction worker, identified as David Lamarke, 47, of Old Saybrook, sustained minor cuts and bruises when he ran across the highway. State police said they obtained an emergency medical examination for Lamarke who was taken to Lawrence & Memorial Hospital for observation. He sustained minor cuts and bruising.

Lamarke was also given an infraction for reckless use of the highway by a pedestrian.

No other injuries were reported.
