    TV tip: "Malibu Country"

    Friday, 8:30 p.m.

    ABC

"Reba," starring Reba McEntire as a wisecracking single mother, was a highly underrated sitcom. And because it spent six years on WB/CW, lots of folks probably never heard of it. Executives at ABC realized that country music legend Reba is naturally funny while also being as comfortable as an old George Strait song, so they were happy to take on this knockoff. Reba is again a single mom with a ditsy, pregnant neighbor. There's even a dim-witted son (instead of son-in-law) and a strong-willed daughter. The "Reba" cast, however, was outstanding, particularly Melissa Peterman, Christopher Rich and Steve Howey, while Reba is the only funny one on "Malibu." Even Lily Tomlin, as Reba's mother, suffers from bad lines. I'd rather watch a rerun of the original.
