Norwich – The city received nine applications from either individuals or firms interested in managing the troubled Norwich Municipal Ice Rink.

The Ice Rink Authority advertised for a director of rink operations, with a salary listed in the "low $50,000" range, after the controversial resignation of former rink manager Mia Sanca. But the authority voted prior to Sanca's March departure to seek applicants. Sanca had been named interim director last June after her husband, Jim Sanca, abruptly resigned.

Mia Sanca resigned March 14 amid criticism for her handling of the Feb. 13 mechanical breakdown and ammonia leak that led to the evacuation of the building and a month-long shutdown. Sanca attempted to withdraw her resignation a week later, however, but was told she was no longer a rink employee when she attempted to resume her duties.

Rink Authority Chairman Francois "Pete" Desaulniers could not be reached for comment this afternoon on how the authority will review the applications.

City Human Resources Director Brigid Marks received the applications at her City Hall office, but said she will not be part of the review process for the position advertised as a "non-city position."

The rink authority has scheduled two special meetings for next week, on Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m. to review and discuss reports on the rink's continuing mechanical problems.

Discussion of the rink director applications is not on either agenda, and special meeting agendas cannot be altered during the meeting.
