New London man facing numerous drug charges after chase

New London — A New London man faces numerous drug-related charges stemming from a domestic incident Wednesday that led to a lockdown at a local elementary school.

Tyrone Santiago, 29, of 70 Brainard St., first floor, was arrested following an afternoon chase across the schoolyard at Jennings Elementary School on Mercer Street.

The school was temporarily locked down while police pursued Santiago, who was reportedly in possession of a handgun. No gun was found during his arrest.

The incident stemmed from a reported domestic dispute shortly before 2 p.m. at Santiago's home. Police said Santiago fled when officers arrived and allegedly discarded a portable scale and a quantity of heroin while fleeing.

Santiago was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree threatening, possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to sell, possession of heroin within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of heroin with intent to sell within 1,500 feet of a school, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence and interfering with an officer.

Held overnight in lieu of a $75,000 bond, Santiago was scheduled to appear Thursday in New London Superior Court.
