Ex-NFL player to be arraigned in Connecticut assault case

Hartford (AP) — Former pro football player Hugh Douglas intends to plead not guilty and fight charges that he assaulted his girlfriend at a downtown Hartford hotel.

The 42-year-old former defensive end with the New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and Jacksonville Jaguars is scheduled to be arraigned Monday in Hartford Superior Court on felony assault and strangulation charges. He posted $50,000 bail.

A police report says Douglas' girlfriend alleged he grabbed her by her throat in a hotel hallway and slammed her into the walls while carrying her to their room. Police say Douglas told investigators the marks on her neck were from rough sex.

Douglas' lawyer, Corey Brinson, says he expects the charges to be dropped.

Douglas lives in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and played in the NFL from 1995 to 2004.
