New London — Police are investigating the reported assault of a man Sunday night in the area of Green and State streets.

Police said they responded to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital at 11:04 p.m. for a report of an assault.

Police said they spoke to the victim, who said he was attacked by a man dressed in black and wearing a mask. The attacker was described as black, 5 feet 10 inches tall and about 175 pounds.

The victim said the robber knocked him to the ground and attempted to rob him, fleeing on foot.

The victim was driven to the hospital in a private car, and hospital employees called police, police said.

When detectives spoke to the victim in the hospital, there were a number of inconsistencies in what he reported to uniformed officers, police said. The incident remains under investigation.
