Fire damages basement of New London home

New London — Fire damaged the basement of a Broad Street home early Saturday, New London Fire Battalion Chief Edward Sargent said.

Firefighters were called to the house at 655 Broad St. shortly after 5 a.m., after a smoke detector went off and woke the couple inside, he said. The residents called 911 and got out. There were no injuries.

Firefighters arrived and found “quite a bit of smoke coming out of the house and fire visible in one basement window,” Sargent said.

The fire was under control within 10 minutes, he said. The house sustained minor fire damage in the basement and smoke damage, he said.

The fire inspector had the electricity shut off temporarily, so the couple was staying with relatives, he said.
