Ledyard — A 2-year-old girl remained hospitalized Tuesday, recovering at Yale-New Haven Hospital from a serious arm injury she suffered Sunday when a car struck a telephone pole on Route 12 and landed upside down in a swimming pool.

The 2-year-old, along with a 4-year-old, were both occupants in a vehicle driven by 25-year-old Marcus Harvin of New Britain, police said.

The 4-year-old was treated for injuries and released from Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

The 2-year-old initially was taken to L+M and later transferred to Yale.

Ledyard police have since charged Harvin with reckless driving and first-degree reckless endangerment. He was also charged with failure to obey an officer’s signal, though police declined to discuss the reason, citing the pending investigation. Police did say there was not a police pursuit.

The crash occurred at 1 a.m. Sunday on Route 12, at the intersection of Long Cove Road in Gales Ferry.

Police said Harvin was driving a 2005 Acura south on Route 12 when he left the roadway and crashed through a utility pole before ending up submerged in a swimming pool at a Baldwin Hill Road address.

Ledyard police Lt. Michael Finkelstein said officers quickly entered the pool to remove two children from the vehicle and then assisted in freeing Harvin.

Harvin is due for arraignment on June 10 at New London Superior Court. Court records show that along with several pending criminal cases, Harvin served six months in prison for a 2012 drunken driving conviction and is on probation.

The accident remains under investigation by the Ledyard Police Department Patrol Division and Accident Reconstruction Team and the Connecticut State Police CARS Unit. The Connecticut State Police and Groton Town Police Department also assisted at the scene, police said.
