Payroll manager accused of stealing from library
Waterbury — A payroll manager for the city of Waterbury has been charged with stealing more than $170,000 from the Silas Bronson Library.
Police tell the Republican-American newspaper that 51-year-old Lynette James took about $100 a day for about five years from funds that came from things such as late-book fines.
James was charged Monday with first-degree larceny. The city also suspended the library's director, Emmett McSweeney, while it investigates the management of the facility.
McSweeney told police that he hadn't checked daily cash receipts with its bank deposits because he trusted James.
James told police she had begun taking the cash as a stipend because she felt she was underpaid. She did not immediately return a telephone message Tuesday seeking comment.
