Police identify Taftville pedestrian seriously injured by 93-year-old driver

Norwich — An 83-year-old Taftville woman was hospitalized with serious injuries Thursday after being struck by a car driven by a 93-year-old man.

Beverly Brown, 83, was hit at about 9:25 a.m. while crossing West Town Street in a crosswalk in front of the Samuel L. Huntington Elementary School, according to police. Police identified the driver as 93-year-old Arthur Chmura of Moosup.

Brown was treated at the scene and initially taken by American Ambulance to The William W. Backus Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition before she was transferred to Hartford Hospital. Her condition was not available Thursday evening.

West Town Street in the area of the school was closed for several hours after the accident while the police department’s accident reconstruction team conducted an investigation. The investigation into the cause is ongoing and police said no charges were filed against Chmura.
