Funding cuts doom Norwich backpack program
Norwich - The Norwich Human Services Safety Net Team is preparing for its final "Backpack to School" program in August and plans to end the program because of staffing cuts in the department.
The program provides free backpacks full of age-appropriate school supplies to needy Norwich students from preschool to high school age. The Human Services Department is seeking volunteers to sort supplies and assemble the backpacks. Contact the department at (860) 823-3778.
Last year, the program served 863 Norwich children.
"Unfortunately due to severe staff cuts, this will be the final year this program is offered," the department announced in a press release.
